The Misadventures of my Wandering Sisters

I’ve stumbled upon some characters who’ve become more like family than mere friends. Each one is unique, and each relationship is a rollercoaster of quirks and inside jokes. What if I ever feel like tempting fate and meeting my maker. In that case, you can bet I’ll be speed-dialling Theresa, our resident hiking junkie. Need a cultural fix or a foodie adventure? Elsie’s your gal – she’s why I’ve ended up in more museums than I care to admit. And then there’s Magali, the wise old sage of the group, always ready with a reality check and a sympathetic ear.

Despite their differences – these ladies have accompanied me on some epic escapades. It’s been a wild ride from scaling hills in Edinburgh with Elsie to Wales adventures with Magali, from sipping hurricanes in New Orleans with Cara to tackling trails in Moab with Theresa. Who needs drama-filled reality TV when you’ve got this dysfunctional family of travel companions?

Introduction: A Comedy of Errors

Ah, the joys of travelling with friends! What could possibly go wrong, right? If you’re anything like me and my pals, you know the answer is EVERYTHING. Buckle up and prepare for a rollercoaster ride through our misadventures in New Orleans, Wales, Edinburgh, and Utah. From missed trams to mistaken spa appointments, this is the tale of how four best friends embarked on a journey filled with laughter, frustration, and unforgettable memories.

Chapter 1: Edinburgh – A Hill of a Time

Our journey begins in bonnie Scotland, where my friend and I set out to explore Edinburgh. Little did I know that this picturesque city had a penchant for hills. From climbing to the castle to trekking to the café where Harry Potter was penned (spoiler alert: it was on top of a mountain), we soon discovered that Edinburgh was determined to give our calves a workout. So please check out The Elephant House. But hey, at least we earned our dessert after all that uphill battle!

When you have a picky eater who needs protein and a vegetarian, finding a restaurant could be as hard as breaking into Fort Knox. We walked around for over an hour in the cold before finding somewhere.

We went to see Edinburgh Castle, someone should have told me the castle was on the top of a hill. Walking like that, I needed to be emotionally and physically prepared, but needless to say, I wasn’t. However, my friend wanted to see the castle, so I went up the hill. After that, we went to the National Gallery.

We embarked on our holy grail quest: a spa appointment beckoned us with the promise of facial bliss and massage magic. With my phone as useful as a chocolate teapot in navigation, my trusty friend took the reins. Our adventure kicked off with a simple task: locate the elusive bus stop. A seemingly straightforward 15-minute stroll spiraled into a comical 30-minute escapade, confirming my award-winning lack of direction skills.

As we hopped on a mystery bus, doubts lingered like shadows in the night. After 40 whimsical minutes on the bus—no,  Dorothy we aren’t in Kansas anymore; we were smack dab in the land of sheep and serendipity. Whose fault was it? Hard to say, considering Google Maps played hide-and-seek with bus stops, leaving us stranded in a farmyard fairytale.

In rode Elsie, our GPS goddess, suggesting a grand exit strategy. Off the bus we hopped, letting Google spin its magic web of recalculations. A 25-minute jaunt later, we arrived at the spa oasis… or so we thought. The unfamiliar exterior raised eyebrows, leading to a comical standoff: my friend hailed it as the spa, while my sharp detective skills deduced otherwise.

Two hours of detours, sheepish encounters, and a spa mirage later, we had a tale grander than fiction. The moral of the story? Sometimes, wrong turns unveil the quirkiest adventures. Here’s to chasing spas, befriending sheep, and navigating buses that might as well be unicorns on wheels. Cheers to the sweet chaos of misadventures that make memories worth their weight in sheep’s wool!

Chapter 2: New Orleans – Beignets, Booze, and Beating the Rain

Next stop: the Big Easy! Our adventures in New Orleans started with a sweet treat at Café du Monde, followed by a hair-raising kayak tour (cue the dramatic thunderstorm). But nothing could dampen our spirits as we indulged in crawfish and cocktails, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of this eclectic city. And let’s not forget the moment I conquered my fear of drowning – or at least attempted to – in the swampy waters of Louisiana, Cara was willing to share a kayak with me.

NOLA is scorching, hotter than a hot toddy during an Irish winter! Despite the intense heat, the city exudes a sense of fun, adventure, and culture. Renting an Airbnb may seem like a good idea until you find yourself nearly drowning in the hot tub – water was definitely not my best friend that day. The streets of NOLA throb with jazz and history, making every step a delightful exploration, particularly with a drink in hand as you leisurely wander through the French Quarter. Safety first – remember to look both ways before crossing the street, and don’t forget to try an alligator sub while you’re there. It may be a bit chewy, but it tastes surprisingly like chicken. And of course, indulge in a hurricane cocktail, a must-try in the city, but beware of its powerful kick.

Chapter 3: Wales – Castles, Cottages, and Beloved Cow Burgers

From bagpipes to sheep-dotted hills, Wales welcomed us with open arms (and a few wrong turns). Our days were filled with castle-hopping, beach strolls (albeit chilly ones), and the occasional quest for a mythical burial ground. But the highlight? A tear-worthy burger experience that left me questioning my carnivorous tendencies. Oh, and did I mention the wine that accompanied baths? Bliss.

Ready for another Dora the Explorer escapade? Grab the map, buckle up, and let’s dive into our quest to locate another elusive spa! Armed with a new sidekick(Magali) and a trusty rental car. I was determined to triumph in my spa-seeking mission during this Welsh sojourn. With a full week of adventure ahead, seven days seemed more than enough to crack this code.

Our days were filled with charming discoveries—a jewelry store here, some shopping there, even a rendezvous with a kayak rental station. But the spa? It remained as elusive as a mirage in the desert, teasing us with its absence. Why hide in plain sight, you stubborn oasis of relaxation? It seems so close and clear on Google map yet I can not find it.

It wasn’t until the final hour, with our Welsh exit looming large, that fate played its hand. There it was, nestled in the shadows of the most labyrinthine street corner—the spa we had chased across the valleys and hills, taunting us with its proximity on the digital realm. Alas, time was not on our side this time.

Onward to new discoveries and hidden gems awaiting my curious hearts!

Chapter 4: Utah – Camping, Hiking, and Shot Uno

Last but not least, when I ventured into the rugged terrain of Moab, Utah, where camping took on a whole new meaning. Shout out to my girl Theresa for being armed with tents, Uno cards, and a healthy dose of skepticism. We braved the wilderness – or at least, the campsite with WiFi and a pool. But don’t be fooled by the amenities; those hikes were no joke. Yet amidst the exhaustion and altitude-induced tipsiness, we found camaraderie and sisterhood in the great outdoors. If anyone ever tell you it’s a quick hike do not believe it and if that person is yours that goes on hike every weekend then you should definitely not believe her. I almost went to meet my maker for the distance and the fact that if I slip and fall I would die.

Conclusion: Sisters from Another Mister

As I reflect on our whirlwind journey, I can’t help but feel grateful for the chaos and camaraderie that comes with travelling with friends. From Edinburgh’s hills to Utah’s canyons, each misadventure brought me closer to each of them, forging bonds that can weather even the stormiest of kayak tours.

And so, dear readers, I bid you farewell until our paths cross again. Remember, life is too short to sweat the small stuff – like missed trams and mistaken spa appointments. Embrace the chaos, cherish the laughter, and always pack an extra pair of socks. After all, you never know when you’ll find yourself hiking through the Scottish Highlands or kayaking in the Louisiana Bayou.

As for me, I’ll be dreaming of my next adventure, wherever it may take me. Cheers to the journey – may it be filled with laughter, love, and plenty of cow burgers.
